The National Executive Branch convened the National Congress for Extraordinary Sessions, which will take place between February 2 and 27, 2026, with an agenda that includes key initiatives for Argentina's economic, trade, and foreign policy. The meeting was convened through the Decree 24 / 2026, published in the Official Gazette this Monday (19.01.2026), and defines the agenda enabled for its legislative treatment during that period.
Among the topics is the bill for the approval of the Association Agreement between MERCOSUR and the European Union, recently signed in Asunción, Paraguay, which the National Executive Branch will send to Congress, as it had anticipatedThe agreement promotes bi-regional integration through the creation of a free trade area and includes provisions on market access, rules of origin, customs and trade facilitation, among others.
Parliamentary treatment is a necessary step for Argentina, as a State Party of MERCOSUR, to finalize the ratification of the agreement, an act by which the State expresses its definitive consent to be bound internationally and enables its application in the domestic legal system.
In addition to the MERCOSUR-EU agreement, the agenda for the extraordinary sessions includes the debate on the adequacy of the glacier protection regime, the Labor Modernization Project, and the designation of Fernando Adolfo Iglesias as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, in accordance with the Foreign Service Law of the Nation.
