The government reduces tariffs and taxes on cell phones, consoles, and technology products.

In line with what anticipated, and with the aim of improving consumer access to technological and air conditioning goods, the National Government implemented a series of modifications to import tariffs and internal tax rates that tax certain products. The measures were implemented this Tuesday (20.05.2025), through the Decree 333 / 2025, published in the Official Gazette.

Cell phones: tariffs reduced to 0%

One of the central decisions is the progressive reduction of tariffs on smartphones and cell phones. Currently, they are taxed at 8% when imported from outside MERCOSUR, but as of January 15, 2026, that percentage will be reduced to 0%This measure is expected to result in lower prices and increased supply in the local market.

Video game consoles: from 35% to 20%

The decree also reduces the import duty on video game consoles, which until now were taxed at 35%. With the amendment, they will now be taxed at 20%, in line with the Mercosur Common External Tariff.

Lower tax burden for Tierra del Fuego

In parallel, reductions in the internal tax are established for various technological goods and household appliances, such as air conditioning equipment, refrigeration units, telephones, monitors, and televisions. In addition, a 0% rate for those products manufactured in Tierra del Fuego by companies benefiting from the special regime of Law No. 19.640, provided that they prove origin in that jurisdiction.

What is the purpose of these measures?

The Executive Branch explained that the purpose of the initiative is:

  • Reduce the cost of key products for access to technology.
  • Promote digital inclusion and technological development.
  • Boosting the competitiveness of the national industrial sector
  • Stimulate domestic consumption and facilitate productive investment

As established by the decree itself, the decisions were adopted within the framework of the powers conferred by MERCOSUR and in compliance with current tax and foreign trade regulations in the Argentine Republic.

Thus, the provisions will come into force Starting May 21 out of 2025, that is, the day after its formalization.
